Dealing with an active leak is one of the worst things you can experience with your roof. It indicates that a problem has gone unnoticed and it’s too late for everything except for a repair. The natural response is to call in a professional roofer for emergency service to temporarily fix it. In the meantime, you shouldn’t just watch the leakage wreak havoc on your home.
As an experienced wind and hail damage contractor, American Heritage Restoration recommends doing the following to keep the water intrusion under control until help arrives:
Create an Escape Route
To prevent further interior damage, you should drain and collect the water safely. Normally, the leak will pool somewhere at the ceiling until it finds a place to go. Then, the water would pass through gaps, such as taped joints of drywall sheets. A single roof leak might seem worse when it drips through several escape routes. It would take hours before the situation would lead to this, so help the water exit the ceiling to direct where it would go.
In a level ceiling, most of the water will pool in the middle. With containers ready, punch a hole in the area where there’s a subtle bulge. Most homeowners instinctively use buckets, but savvy roofing contractors would advise using a garbage pail because it’s easy to move around with its wheels.
Use a Makeshift Funnel
Leaving the container directly below the hole in the ceiling would suffice to catch dripping water. If the leak is quite strong, though, consider using a giant funnel to channel it to the outside more easily. Using a one-gallon carton or plastic bottle, garden hose, ladder and duct tape, you can create a leak-controlling funnel from scratch for convenient drainage.
Soak Up Standing Water
If the water has made its way to your ground-floor areas, there’s a good chance that it has already damaged your attic. It’s imperative to check your home’s top-most room to identify red flags. Using a flashlight, any roof leak repair specialist would suggest looking for puddles. Soak them up with a sponge and save any valuables you kept in the attic.
